About Me
Therapy is about the connection between your therapist and you. I believe that this relationship is at the foundation of healing and I pride myself on providing a nonjudgmental and safe environment for my clients. My name is Genny and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor and active member of the B.C. Association of Clinical Counsellors. I hold a Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University and I have extensive experience working with children, youth, adults and families as a Behaviour Interventionist, Education Assistant, and now as a Registered Clinical Counsellor. My practice is informed by the belief that everyone has the capability to heal and I work with you to reconnect you to your life, yourself and others. I provide a warm and welcoming environment for all individuals. I am an LGBTQIA2S+ ally and an advocate for people experiencing oppression. It is here that you can share, heal and grow, and embrace yourself and your life.
My Therapeutic Approach
The theoretical underpinnings that guide my practice are trauma informed, client-centered and holistic. A therapeutic approach to therapy is the lens in which your therapist will address your concerns. Describing myself as an eclectic therapist, I use a combination of therapeutic approaches in my work with you, believing that this allows for an individualized and highly personal experience. Some of the theories I draw from include mindfulness-based cognitive behaviour therapy (MCBT), emotion focused therapy (EFT), solution-focused therapy (SFT), feminist theories, and humanistic theory. I take a holistic approach towards healing, believing that the mind, body, and spirit are interconnected and are important aspects to mental wellness.
My Story
My method in therapy is to first understand you - your story, what led you here, your challenges and your strengths. And here is a little of my story. I was born and raised in the beautiful Vancouver area and although I lived briefly abroad - I knew I couldn't be away from the mountains for too long. I ended up as a therapist for many different reasons. My first perspective into the world of mental health was through my personal experiences - this is where I developed my passion for helping. I began volunteering at a hospice for children and had a direct glimpse into the grief and loss experience - and this only made me more passionate about the world of therapy.
I have always been fascinated by the human mind and behaviour, and graduated from SFU with an undergraduate degree in psychology. Following my undergraduate degree, I travelled to London, England where I lived, worked, ate, and explored. Upon my return to Vancouver, I began my Masters degree in counselling psychology and I worked as an Education Assistant throughout. With each and every experience there has been a common theme - that humans struggle. But we also heal and grow, and we learn to cope with and move through these struggles. I now live in North Vancouver, with my husband, our daughter and our dog. Thank you for listening to me, now I cannot wait to listen to you!
